The Weimar Republic was indeed a republic, as it was a democratic state with an elected president and parliament. However, it faced significant challenges from both the left and the right, including opposition from groups that sought to overthrow the democratic system. The Republicans lost the Spanish Civil War for several reasons. They faced internal divisions among various leftist factions, including anarchists, socialists, and communists, which weakened their unity and coordination. Additionally, the Republicans were not as well-equipped or organized as the Nationalists, who received significant support from fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. The Nationalists also had a more cohesive military command structure under General Francisco Franco, while the Republicans struggled with infighting and lack of effective leadership.
